Family: The Riley family goes back scores of magical generations. Every few decades, however, a squib has been known to be born into the family, thus it was not shocking when Spencer failed to show any magical ability. The family has not been strict as to blood purity, but have tended to stay mostly magical in marriages and reproduction over the years.
Spencer is the son of Mei and Alan Riley. The Korean woman and English man also had another son, Warren, who is four years older than Spencer.
Personal:
Growing up, Spencer never quote showed a penchant for magic like his older brother did. When they were young, he and Warren fought like any pair of brothers would, but as they grew, Warren really took to him, trying to teach him all he could about magic since Spence couldn’t go to Hogwarts himself.
Spencer went to muggle schools for all his childhood, but learned all the theories of magic through Warren’s books and notes, and during holidays and summer vacation when Warren was home and able to teach him hands on. It was all this knowledge that led Spence to apply to Merlin’s when he finished his high school education.
As an undergraduate, Spencer studied both Magical History and Muggle Studies. He achieved all of his requirements without the use of a wand, as he is unable to manifest practical magic through such methods, but made his case with the Dean of Admissions in order to still study at Merlin’s- he was able to pass all the theoretical entrance exams with flying colors, and all practical exams that did not require a wand. Similarly, he passed all his undergraduate courses and exams, moving on to study Muggle Artifacts and general Muggle Studies at the Mastery level.
Spencer’s goal is to find a way to combine magical and muggle elements, harnessing the technical abilities of muggles to make up for the lack of practical magical ability within Squibs like himself. In this, Spencer hopes to invent a wand-alternative for Squibs, so that they might be closer to equal with their own kind and study alongside each other someday.
