| Subject: Daryl Oliver (WIP) Sat Mar 17, 2018 8:56 pm | |
| Full Name: Daryl Eugene Oliver Nickname Fairy (Skyler), Ollie (Ginny), Badger Boy (Draco) Age: 23 House: Hufflepuff Birthdate: March 26th Blood Type: Muggleborn Job: Apprentice Wandmaker Likes: - Spoiler:
- Old movies – Daryl prefers older movies to newer ones such as black and white or where Technicolor was brand new.
- Comedy – Mainly older generation such as Abbot and Costello, Red Skelton, Don Knotts, Charlie Chaplin, Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor, etc.
- Pranks – With his imagination it is a bad combination. Daryl calls himself an ‘equal opportunity prankster’ not caring whom it is he pranks. The only times his pranks come off as malicious is if he’s getting even with someone that he thinks deserves it (ie a bully).
- Comic books (Batman and Spiderman mostly) – One time Daryl actually did up his room with his mother’s yarn to make it into a ‘spider web’. He also had a peddle batmobile car when he was little.
- Jolt Cola (its liquid crack in a can) – It was drank on a dare and ever since then, Daryl has been hooked on the carbonated sugary caffeine drink.
- Sugar – It’s sweet and gives you energy!
- Charms – You can do amazing things with this skill!
- Mischief – Does it really need explaining?!
- His friends – If you don’t like your friends there is something wrong with you.
- Confusing people – people confuse him, so he likes to confuse others so he's not the only one
Dislikes:- Spoiler:
- Mice & Rats – If you saw one in your kitchen you’d flip too! Besides, they eat people and carry diseases.
- Jelly Beans – Really? They’re gross. The one candy Daryl doesn’t like and won’t touch with a ten foot pole. It was reinforced when someone talked him into eating a Bertie Bott’s bean.
- History of Magic – Professor Binns! ‘Nuff said!
- Boredom – Its boring! And Daryl gets into trouble whenever he is bored because he feels he has to rectify the situation.
- Flying – If people were meant to fly they would have evolved to grow wings. Transfiguration and animorphmagi don’t count!
- Cats – Totally blames the demon cat of Skyler’s. She had dumped the cat on his lap and it had decided he’s make an excellent scratching post.
- Hospitals – It’s the smell and the memory of losing his mother in such a place. Its also full of sick and dying people.
- Kowtowing – Will not do it.
Strengths: Loyal, Stubborn, Crazy, Charms, Perseverance, Self-Confidence - Spoiler:
- Loyal – Daryl has and will always be loyal to his best friend and anyone whom he thinks deserves it. This includes keeping silent even if it’s not for his best interest if it’s for a friend. Has a sense of loyalty as well that drives him even if its loyalty and honor that is only known to him.
- Stubborn – Admittedly it is also a weakness but Daryl utilizes it for strength most of the time. Coupled with his determination he has been able to do what most would think impossible. It has helped him overcome limitations by believing steadfastly that there are no limitations or that they don’t apply to him or his situation. It has helped him keep going when one would normally admit defeat.
- Crazy – What is defined of doing the same thing over and over again yet expecting a different result. Daryl admits to being slightly insane because he does things that he knows he shouldn’t and pushing boundaries without realizing that he should stop.
- Charms – He’s always had a knack for Charms which may or may not be why he’s also skilled at finding mischief. Flitwick encouraged his talent (for Charms, not mischief), which was why Daryl had joined the Charms Club while at Hogwarts. It helped that he had an abundant imagination and creativity to draw on.
- Perseverance – Even as a child Daryl had always had a very strong will that allowed him to endure a lot. He knows how to keep at something even if it seems hopeless.
- Self-Confident – Daryl is anything but shy or humble. Will start singing and dancing in a crowded street because the mood takes him and doesn’t care what people think of him. Doesn’t try to conform himself to anyone’s way of thinking or try to be what they think he should be. Even when he’s being a prat, he’s always been himself.
- Ambidextrous – Daryl never had a preferred hand when he was little and when he’d broken his right arm one summer it forced him to learn to do things with his left hand. Seeing how useful it was, he continued to use both hands.
Weaknesses: Reckless, Impulsive, Inconsiderate, Incorrigible, Rule Flouter, Squirrels, Temper - Spoiler:
- Reckless – Doesn’t always think things through nor their consequences. Along with his other personality traits Daryl causes a lot of mayhem.
- Impulsive – Has very poor impulse control. When he has an urge he does it jumping in with both feet. This lack of control has him doing things like peeing on a girl, or deciding to play with bouncy balls in a store. His redeeming quality is he’s not vindictive (unless they deserve it) or sadistic (unless they deserve it) so he never aims to harm (mostly).
- Inconsiderate – Doesn’t think about others generally when he does or says things. He won’t lie to save their feelings. He might try and bend the truth or omit something, but he doesn’t outright lie.
- Incorrigible – It’s just who he is and has been fostered along by those like his parents or best friend who realized that he was different and spoke his mind. Isn’t repentant by a long shot when it comes to his antics.
- Rule Flouter – Doesn’t like people telling him what he can and can’t do first as a child then later in school. As a child he purposely colored outside the lines and didn’t use the correct colors. He would also do things that he was told he couldn’t or should do just to prove that he could. The same holds true when he began wizarding school.
- Squirrels – They’re secretly plotting to overtake the world. ‘Nuff said.
- Temper – Usually Daryl is easy going but he does have a temper and when it rears its head, its quite bad.
Family:Father – Jason Thomas Oliver DECEASEDMother – Alice Renee {Jacobs} Oliver DECEASEDPaternal Uncle – Norman Alan Oliver - Spoiler:
Alice grew up in the suburbs of Seattle, Washington as the youngest child of three. The Jacobs were lower middle class yet they never lacked for anything. All three of the Jacobs children were average students. Mrs. Jacobs was a homemaker and never seemed to be finished with the housework. Mr. Jacobs worked as a security guard as well as in his wife’s window shop. They did the best they could for their children and were even foster parents until Mrs. Jacobs’ car accident which caused her brain damage. While one of Alice’s sisters married a policeman the other married a grocer and becoming housewives as their mother had been. While Alice had respected for all that her mother did, she didn’t want that kind of life. In middle school she had been a member of a soccer team as well as track. In high school she took as many electives as she could so she had knowledge of all the basics. Upon graduation of high school she attended a community college and got a job at JC Penny's where she worked her way up the ladder intent on being able to be self sufficient. It was there at the makeup counter she met her future husband Jason.
Jason grew up in Orange County, California whose parents were well off. Mr. Oliver had been in the stock market in New York before moving to the west coast becoming an agent. Mrs. Oliver had been a painter until getting married then became a teacher. The younger Oliver boy was an architect since he was a toddler with building blocks. He was the older son yet he always felt inadequate next to his younger brother Norman. While his parents seemed to favor the younger brother trying to meet his needs, Jason felt as if he had raised himself. A nerd in school he graduated on the honor roll for both middle and high school and in the running for valedictorian. While he was in middle school he joined the chess team, went to tournaments and won trophies. In college he majored in everything he needed to become a contractor. His dorm mate taught him GO telling him it was a greater challenge than chess. He soon became very well known for his building designs. Jason met his future wife at a makeup counter while trying to pick up a gift for his then girlfriend. They had traveled up to Seattle, Washington as tourists but during that trip dumped the girlfriend so he could start dating Alice. It had been a trying affair having to travel back and forth. After a few years they married and moved down to California where Alice fell in love with the place.
Norman Oliver had always been the odd one out. He never got on well with his older brother and hardly saw him. In elementary school it was quickly noted by his teachers that he wasn’t listening and did his homework his own way. After some IQ tests, he was quickly moved up grades. Graduating high school at the age of twelve he was able to get a scholarship to Oxford which he gladly took. Moving to England he never looked back and had nothing much to do with his family until he was asked to be Daryl's godfather. Never thinking he'd actually have to live up the responsibility, he'd agreed and was in for a shock when he was called to take guardianship of his nephew when Jason and Alice died. Norman had spent a lot of time at Oxford earning degrees and doctorates until a professor of his whom he’d been helping had him apply to become a teacher himself. Norman hadn’t been sure he’d want that as he’d only helped with the syllabuses and marking homework. The man found people to be bothersome and not quite up to his ideal. He had become a substitute and tried his hand at primary and secondary schools and decided that as much as he didn’t like primary students, they were the lesser of evils. Older children were harder to quell and had the mess of going through puberty whereas primary students were easier to teach. Personal:- Spoiler:
Daryl is a single child who was spoiled rotten by his parents since they couldn’t have any more children nor did they want to adopt. From an early age it was clear that he would be a handful. His father had wanted to take him to a doctor and see if he was ADHD since it seemed his concentration was very short and he was constantly in motion more than a young child usually was. His mother had vetoed that since she’d seen one of her foster siblings on the medication to try and ‘control’ it. Her patience level was very high, though Daryl nearly drove her sparse with his antics and nearly impossible impulse control. Just like his father, Daryl was born and raised in Orange County, California where he went to the beach nearly every day which is where he met his best friend. The way they met was, in hindsight, very them. While at the beach they had started to play together until Skyler got stung by a jellyfish. Daryl having heard that if you peed on the wound it would help, promptly did so since cutting open warts and peeing on them made them go away. Daryl’s impulse had him acting since no one else had realized she was hurt and he knew that you had to act fast. That was the strange way that they had sort of bonded as friends.
Since they both did odd things, Daryl had never really thought it was strange. It didn't seem worth mentioning and being who he was Daryl just let it be. He’d been happy that he had found a friend that understood him and seemed to be as hyperactive as he was. His childhood was a happy one filled with many misadventures and plenty of fun and mischief until his world was turned on its head at the age of ten. His parents died in an accident while on vacation in a car crash. His father had died instantly while his mother had lingered. Daryl had sat at his mother's bedside until she died. It was then that Daryl decided that he hated hospitals. He'd resented his uncle for taking him away from the United States and dragging him to England away from everything he knew and was used to. Everything was very different and confusing for him to try and adapt to. There was not only the fact that the language was different when it came to certain words and phrases, but he found that the school was different as well. He was teased until those that were constantly mocking him or picking on him began to suffer his pranks. Eventually he came around and extracted a promise from his uncle that he would allow him to go to California for the summers to visit his best friend. Daryl being a prankster had thought someone was trying to prank him when he’d gotten his Hogwarts letter. He didn’t think it was his uncle since the man didn’t seem to have any imagination to him. When the representative came, he became really excited and peppered the person with question after question which made them think that he would end up in Ravenclaw. When he got into the wizard world he decided that it was amazing and kind of backwards but that he would cross bridges when he came to them. Naturally, he learned about Harry Potter since you couldn’t turn in any direction without hearing about him. The whole thing seemed weird to Daryl and he just shoved it aside since it had nothing to do with him. He ended up enjoying the alley and nearly drove the school representative into hexing him. Norman who’d accompanied them hadn’t said a word, just following silently with a stony face. At the wand shop was the only time he interfered and confiscated Daryl’s wand right away not allowing him to have it until they got home. HOGWARTS- Spoiler:
[FIRST YEAR] The train ride had been an experience and a half for Daryl. He’d met people and decided there were others he didn’t like. It hadn’t helped that he’d ended up sticking another student’s feet to the floor then being hexed by their friend until a prefect came and broke it up lecturing them. It was lucky that term hadn’t officially started and they hadn’t been sorted yet. When it had been his turn to put the hat on his head, Daryl had balked and tried to ask the lady in charge how he knew the hat wouldn’t damage his brain. He and the hat had an interesting conversation and it was a very happy Daryl that was placed in Hufflepuff to the bemusement and confusion of those that had interacted with him. Throughout the entire year he had to serve no less than 4 detentions a month. The boy came to know Hogwarts and the Caretaker Argus Filch’s mood very well. There was also a trip up to the Headmaster’s office for a lecture about not trying to exorcize his staff members. Daryl had huffed but agreed to give up on trying to get Professor Binns to ‘move on’. Quidditch while fascinating Daryl, it scared him and he vowed to keep his feet firmly on the ground. It had been torture when he had to have his first flying lesson and subsequent lessons. It was with relief when they were no longer required. Not seeing a reason to return to his uncle’s home during the holidays, Daryl stayed at the school but had made sure to send a letter asking his uncle to send the gift he’d bought in Diagon Alley and left at the house to Skyler. Writing letters weren’t his forte and he hadn’t been sure what he should write anyway since it the school representative had been sure that Daryl understood about the statute of secrecy. He wasn’t allowed to tell anyone which he didn’t like but adhered to after a talk with his Uncle Norman. By the end of the year, Daryl had people he didn’t mind calling friends that he would talk with or spend time with.
[SECOND YEAR] The summer had been one of Daryl’s most difficult trying to keep the information of his new life from his best friend. Somehow he was sure he’d succeeded then returned to England for his next year of schooling. This year was to be different however which he learned when he was in the Leaky Cauldron and heard whispers of Harry Potter. Feeling briefly sorry for the kid, he forgot all about him though later when he’d gone to collect his school books and meet up with some of his year mates. They couldn’t talk of nothing else either so Daryl soon grew bored and went on his own way. On the train it again was filled with nothing but talk of Potter. The trip to school was not by boat this time but by horse drawn carriages. Daryl had couldn’t keep his eyes off of the skeletal horse and had been looked at as if he’d lost his mind when he’d asked about the strange horse. Thankfully, there had been a seventh year who told Daryl it was a threstral and why most people couldn’t see them. Daryl had decided, since he’d become aware of the boy and read his somewhat questionable history, that he would judge the boy not by what was said and written but how he behaved. While the upper years didn’t have much to do with the younger years and Daryl didn’t go out of his way to either avoid or try and get a look at the kid, he had seen him at a distance once or twice. That year also saw Daryl rack up yet even more detentions. He was pretty sure that Filch would engrave Daryl’s name on the mop and bucket he kept ‘just for him’ to use. There was another trip to the headmaster’s office and having to write an official letter of apology to Professor Quirrell. This year was the year Daryl was sure that wizards were insane and more biased and prejudice then ‘muggles’ were. It was also made clear that Daryl needed to learn a little bit of control. It helped when he got a mentor in an older Hufflepuff boy who taught him that there was more to Hufflepuff than met the eye. Professor Flitwich also began to take an interest in him and asked him to join the Charms Club which Daryl readily and happily agreed to. While it had been amusing to send a letter asking his uncle which electives he should apply for, Daryl knew that there were some classes that he would not take. Divination had sounded like it would prove amusement, but also frustration so he didn’t take it. He had, in the end, signed up for Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, and Care of Magical Creatures since he wanted to learn more about the threstrals and if there were other creatures like that.
[THIRD YEAR] Daryl ended up giving his Ancient Runes teacher the nickname Pikachu because her last name just screamed that. In truth, he ended up forgetting what her real name was because she allowed him to use it begrudgingly. Arithmancy was fun since he was good with numbers and Care of Magical Creatures was something he looked forward to. It was a school year to look forward to save that they had an idiot in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Daryl had been tempted to write a letter to Potter complaining about it since he had been the one that had done away with their previous professor. It was a good thing that Uncle Norman had been with Daryl that year in Diagon Alley after having read Daryl’s school book list. While his nephew had gotten new robes (he’d had a growth spurt), and refilled his potions ingredients, Norman had been in the book store skimming the books that Daryl was supposed to purchase. The man had stated it was his money and he refused to buy garbage. Daryl had just shrugged and was happy he had more room in his trunk for things he’d want to take with him to school. Sure that it would end up just like his previous two years with detentions and a trip to the headmaster’s office, he was rather surprised when it took a twist. A basilisk had been unleashed and while no one knew it was a basilisk at the time, Daryl had for the first time, felt very scared and tempted to break the statute by writing to his friend and telling her about the monster in the school. At least he hadn’t written to his uncle who would have for sure pulled him from the school. The man had been tempted just by seeing what ‘kind of idiocy’ he’d be learning this year. While he didn’t buy talismans that were being peddled around, he did walk with a group and didn’t act out as much as usual. It struck him as a little too much like the boy who cried wolf if he pulled pranks this year. The only exception was their Defense teacher who didn’t seem to know what sarcasm was. Like the other students, he went to Hogsemede as much as he could and had been tempted to try and get a magical taxi or something. He got a lot of sugar that year from all kinds of treats and went broke until he learned he could sell the goodies to younger kids or others who didn’t have permission to go. To keep his sanity he ran delivery orders. Once again, it had been the boy wonder and his sidekicks that had taken care of the threat to the school. Daryl felt sorry for the kid sure that he had been manipulated. After being ostracized by the school, of course he’d want to try and clear his name. While not the smartest tool in the shed, Daryl was beginning to realize something important and decided that he did not want to draw the attention of the teachers or stand out remarkable in any way other than what he already had shown. It was only to Professor Flitwick that he didn’t play dumb or hide his ability. While he’d wanted to strangle Potter for having their teacher vanish and having him replaced with a moron, he also wanted to write a letter of thanks. For two years now the end of term quizzes had been canceled. It probably sucked for the older students, but Daryl was grateful.
[FOURTH YEAR] This was the year that had Daryl seriously considering dropping out of Hogwarts and trying to find a private tutor. His normal CoMC book text was replaced by a biting book which he found really awesome until it tried to eat his uncle. At least it kept the place free of mice. Then on the train it was stopped and really creepy crypt keeper zombies had come on and tried to suck out his soul. He felt glad that he wasn’t the only one when he heard about others fainting, going cold, and such. Then to learn that the school would be surrounded by the things ALL YEAR! Because they wanted to keep Harry Potter safe from a deranged mad man that had broken out of their prison and wanted to kill the Gryffindor.
[FIFTH YEAR] Daryl was able to buy a ticket to see the World Cup and had accompanied a Seventh Year Ravenclaw who was a friend. She had laughed at him and pulled him back into his seat after the Veela demonstration which had confused Daryl. Apparently the girl had been glad to see that he was ‘human’ after all and was maybe a ‘slow developer’. His response had been to be mature and stick his tongue out at her. Naturally, the good times didn’t last and they had to run for their lives and from Death Eaters. That was the year Daryl learned about those and the Tri wizard tournament. There was a lot of talk from the Hufflepuffs about what they would do if they won. The new Defense teacher was incredible and Daryl loved the class. It seemed that maybe Lockhart had just been a fluke. Then of course two other schools arrived from both France and Bulgaria to complete the tri wizard tournament for the European magic schools. Then the names came out of the cup and Daryl felt really sorry for the Potter kid and was sure that a teacher at the school wanted him dead. While he hadn’t bought or worn a Potter Stinks badge, Daryl did support Cedric and his own house for the Hogwarts Champion. The Yule Ball had Daryl wanting to hide in his common room but had been asked by a pretty Hufflepuff girl so he had said yes. It hadn’t been as bad as he had expected it would go and he had fun. Up until the next day when he’d gotten a broken nose from the jilted boyfriend. While he’d been proud he hadn’t had to go to the hospital wing, Daryl wasn’t confident to fix it himself and actually thought about leaving it broken. The loss of Cedric had all of Hufflepuff house in grief; Daryl included who had counted the boy as a friend. That summer, he didn’t go to California but stayed home. Norman actually proved to be human himself and helped Daryl with his problem.
[SIXTH YEAR This year saw a lot of turbulence, more so then any other of his previous years. Part of it was due to the fact that Death Eaters were out, there was a horrid woman for Defense Against the Dark Arts, and much more going on with the student body. Part of the commotion and upheaval in the castle was that Potter had begun to hang out with Slytherins along with surprising, Daryl’s best friend who had come to England only for it to be revealed that she was related to the current darkest wizard in history.
